Olson was born in Portland, Oregon, on August 18, 1975, to publisher Donald Lee Olson and nurse Melinda Leora.
Olson moved to Spokane, Washington, with her family, and then to Vashon Island, Washington, in Puget Sound, 13 miles (21 kilometres) west of Seattle, where she stayed until she was eight.
Her family later relocated to Tualatin, Oregon, where Olson grew up on a farm.
Her father was the publisher of the Portland Tribune from 2000 to 2001. Olson was twelve years old when he was involved in a serious bicycle accident involving a vehicle, resulting in a fractured skull that required reconstructive surgery.
